Novel NeuroAIDS Therapies: Integrated Preclinical/Clinical Program (IPCP) (U19): -Purpose. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) requests applications for research on the development of novel neuroAIDS therapeutics. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) fosters bench to bedside research comprised of preclinical research, studies on translational animal models, and pilot clinical projects. In the past, HIV-related drug development efforts have focused primarily on viral targets and a small number of host targets. The Integrated Preclinical/Clinical Program (IPCP) supports drug development efforts focused on new targets, particularly those targets that may have immunomodulatory, neurobehavioral and/or neuroprotective actions in the context of HIV infection. A minimum of three interrelated research projects and an Administrative Core must be proposed. At least one component (research project) must be derived from industry (i.e., pharmaceutical, chemical, bioengineering or biotechnological companies). A Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) for each award under this FOA will be constituted within 6 months of the award. This funding opportunity AI-06-009, was originally issued jointly with NIAID and NIMH. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the multi-project Cooperative Agreement (U19) award mechanism -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIMH anticipates awarding approximately $2-3 million dollars to fund 1-2 new and/or competing continuation grants. -Budget and Project Period. Budget limitations for individual applications are specified in Section II.2. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed five years.
