Development of novel sensors and control systems is needed to support the full-scale implementation and operation of highly efficient power generation technologies such as advanced combustion, gasification, turbines, fuel cells, gas cleaning technologies, and carbon sequestration. Current technology developments are in support of the FutureGen initiative and other programmatic efforts aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reducing emissions thereby removing the environmental concerns associated with fossil fuel use. Grant applications are sought for novel measurement approaches that can determine the integrity and thickness of refractory used in slagging coal gasification systems. Slagging coal gasifiers operate under extreme reducing conditions, high temperatures (less than 1000 oC), and elevated pressure (greater than 200 psig), which create highly erosive and corrosive conditions. The ability to estimate the thickness or integrity of the refractory in the harshest zones of the gasifier will contribute to extending the operational time between shutdowns, thus improving the reliability of a gasification-based power system. Low cost point measurements are acceptable approaches. A single threshold measurement of refractory thickness integrated with temperature measurement is also of interest. Non-destructive evaluations (NDE) that can be used during operation will also provide valuable information for determining when a gasifier should be shutdown for maintenance.
