Opportunity PA-06-527: -Special Note: The participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) have distinctive guidelines, requirements, salary and research support levels provided under the auspices of this funding opportunity announcement in order to accommodate the career needs of researchers working in fields related to their specific research missions. Below are the general provisions of the Independent Scientist Award (K02). -In general, the Independent Scientist Award (K02) provides support for newly independent scientists (see IC provisions) who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus as a means of enhancing their research careers. -The K02 is intended to foster the development of outstanding scientists and to enable them to expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research.

- Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. The applicant institution must have a well-established record of research career development activities and demonstrate a commitment to research and to the continuing development of the candidate as a productive independent scientist. The institution must provide assurance that the candidate is an integral part of its research and academic program and must certify that the candidate will be released from other duties and be able to devote at least 75% effort to the research program. The institution must also delineate the duties from which the candidate will be released in order to devote this effort.
