Opportunity PAR-09-059: Purpose: The purpose of the NIAAA Career Transition Award (K22) program is to enable outstanding new investigators to establish an independent research program in basic or clinical research related to the health risks and benefits of alcohol consumption, or the prevention and treatment of alcohol-related problems.This is achieved by providing salary and core research support for up to three years after candidates receive faculty appointments at academic research institutions. Mechanism of Support: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Career Transition Award (K22) mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The total amount to be awarded by the NIAAA and the number of awards will depend upon the quality and merit of applications received and the availability of funds. NIAAA anticipates 2 - 5 new K22 awards per year. Budget and Project Period: Because the nature and scope of the proposed K22 award program will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the NIAAA provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Successful applicants will receive a letter of commitment for funding from NIAAA.To activate the award, candidates must obtain a formal offer of appointment to a tenure-track or equivalent position at a U.S. academic institution.Candidates will have up to 18 months to activate the award. The K22 award will provide salary up to 100 percent of the institutional base salary, up to a maximum of $105,000, based on a full-time, 12-month staff appointment, plus fringe benefits. The candidate must devote a minimum of 75% full-time professional effort to research and research career development activities.In addition to salary, the K22 award will provide a maximum of $75,000 per year for research-related expenses. Eligible Institutions/Organizations: Institutions/organizations listed in Section III are eligible to apply. Eligible Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI): Also referred to as the Applicant or Candidate, individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research and career development activities are invited to work with their mentor and sponsoring institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Eligible applicants include individuals with a research or health professional doctoral degree and 2-6 years of postdoctoral experience.The program is limited to: 1) advanced postdoctoral fellows at extramural research institutions who are currently supported by an NIAAA-sponsored Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) for Individual Postdoctoral Fellows (F32) or an Institutional Research Training Grant (T32); or 2) current Intramural Research Training Awardees (IRTA) or equivalent staff fellows in the NIAAA Division of Intramural Clinical and Biological Research (DICBR).Candidates must be U.S. citizens or non-citizen nationals, or individuals lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. See Section III. Number of PDs/PIs: Only one PD/PI may be designated on the application. Number of Applications: Applicants may only have one individual Career Development Award application pending peer review at any time. Resubmissions: Applicants may submit a resubmission application, but such application must include an Introduction addressing the previous peer review critique (Summary Statement).See new NIH policy on resubmission (amended) applications (NOT-OD-09-003, NOT-OD-09-016).
