Opportunity RFA-DE-10-004: Purpose. The long term goal of this initiative is to increase the service life of dental resin composite restorations.The objective of this initiative is to better understand how degradation due to either physical and environmental factors and/or the composition of dental resin composites interacting with the biofilm in the oral cavity facilitates the development of secondary decay. This initiative will stimulate multidisciplinary research to develop methods to assess the clinical success of dental resin composite materials as a restorative material, and encourage research for improving this material and/or for the development of new restorative materials.Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 grant mechanism.Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIDCR intends to commit $3 million total costs in FY2010 to support meritorious projects solicited through this FOA and RFA-DE-10-005. We anticipate that 3-5 R01 awards will be made, pending the number and quality of applications and availability of funds. Budget and Project Period. The requested budget may not exceed $250,000 direct costs per year for a maximum of $1 million direct costs over a four-year project period.Application Research Plan Component Length: The R01 application Research Plan component of the PHS398 (Items 3-5) may not exceed 12 pages, including tables, graphs, figures, diagrams, and charts.Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Institutions/organizations listed in Section III, 1.A. are eligible to apply. Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are invited to work with their institution/ organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.
