Partnerships for Vaccine and Diagnostic Development: Research of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health, strives to understand, treat and ultimately prevent the myriad infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases that threaten millions of human lives. The NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) supports extramural research to control and prevent diseases caused by virtually all infectious agents. This includes basic biomedical research, such as studies of microbial physiology and antigenic structure; applied research, including the development of diagnostic tests; and clinical trials to evaluate experimental drugs and vaccines. This Partnership program will use the cooperative agreement (U01) funding mechanism to support the development and testing of products for selected human infectious diseases of public health importance. A key component of the Partnership initiatives is the development of appropriate partnerships among government, academia, and the biotechnology, chemical or pharmaceutical industries.
