- Grant Description
- Purpose. This FOA for R34 applications seeks to support: (a) pilot and/or feasibility testing of new, revised, or adapted preventive intervention approaches targeting the initiation of drug use, the progression to abuse or dependence, and the acquisition or transmission of HIV infection among diverse populations and settings; and (b) pre-trial feasibility testing for prevention services and systems research. The NIDA R34 mechanism does not support the development of intervention protocols, manuals, or the standardization of protocols. It is expected that research conducted via this R34 mechanism will consist of early stage efficacy, effectiveness or services research that will provide intervention pilot and/or feasibility data that is a pre-requisite for submitting larger drug abuse and/or drug-related HIV prevention intervention studies. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Planning Grant (R34) award mechanism and runs in parallel with FOAs of identical scientific scope, PA-08-217, PA-08-218, and PA-08-219 that encourage applications under the NIH Research Project Grant (R01), Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21), and Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanisms, respectively. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
