- The U.S. Department of Energy apos;s Office ofScience, Office of Biological andEnvironmental Research (OBER), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA),Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES),NationalResearch Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants Program hereby announce theirinterest in receiving applications for genomics-based research that willleadto the improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production offuelssuch as ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically,applicationsare sought for fundamental research on plants that will improve biomasscharacteristics, biomass yield, or that will facilitate lignocellulosicdegradation. Systems biology approaches to identify genetic indicatorsenablingplants to be efficiently bred or manipulated, or research that yieldsfundamental knowledge of the structure, function and organization of plantgenomes leading to improved feedstock characterization and sustainabilityarealso encouraged.
