- Grant Description
- MMS has received funds to conduct offshore sand studies in support of coastal restoration efforts in the Gulf Coast states of Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi. We anticipate that the funds will be used to investigate available sources of Federal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) sand that can be used to restore portions of coastal areas that were damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. This opportunity is for obtaining geological samples using a vibracore drill in the St. Bernard Shoals area in the OCS offshore Mississippi at sites that will be identified by an on-going study by the U.S. Geological Survey. The areas in this study must be within the Federally-managed OCS and they must be located such that use of the resource as restoration material is economically viable.
