Probiotics for Pediatric Illnesses (R01): The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for pilot research on mechanism(s) of action, safety and efficacy of probiotics, as well as for more robust intervention studies for the prevention and treatment of pediatric illnesses for which more convincing preliminary data are available. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanisms, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. This FOA will use the NIH R01award mechanism, but will be and runs in parallel with another Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) of identical scientific scope (PA-06-316, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-316.html) that will utilize the NCCAM R21 funding mechanism.
