Grant Description
This Fimding Opportunity Announcement is intended to accelerate market development of advanced R-5 highly-insulating residential windows by limiting the consumer price premium to $3-$4/ft2 above conventional double glazed, low-e, argon gas filled units. The R-5 windows are to achieve a whole window National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) U-value of 0.19 and 0.22 Btu/h-ft2-F for fixed and double hung windows, respectively, and demonstrate solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) greater than 0.30. This may be achieved through a combination of technology development, production engineering, and supply chain improvements that enhance economical mass production. The R-5 windows shall exhibit compatibility with conventional domestic building installation practices and be fully compliant with other domestic consumer expectations for visibility, durability, and comfort. This project is intended to achieve commercialization of cost effective, highly insulating windows in the 2010-2012 timeframe for a broad range of applications in colder climates. It is one component of a multi-faceted windows market transformation effort and will also serve as an interim step to achieving DOEs long term windows R D goal of developing windows with dynamic solar control and a U-value as low as 0.10 Btu/h-ft2-F.
