Protein Profiles of the Oral Mucosal Tissues in HIV /AIDS: - The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate research that will utilize a proteomic approach to characterize the protein profiles and protein-protein interactions in the oral mucosa in conjunction with HIV/AIDS. The research is expected to provide significant insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with the pathogenesis of the oral disorders associated with AIDS and the impact of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It is anticipated that this initiative will identify novel strategies for prevention and management of oral manifestations of AIDS. - Up to $3 million total cost (Direct costs plus Facilities and Administrative costs) may be awarded in support of this solicitation - Up to six to ten new and/or competing continuation grants are anticipated. - This RFA will use NIH individual research project grant (R01) and the exploratory/development research grant (R21) award mechanisms. - Eligible organizations include: For-profit or non-profit organizations, public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories, units of State and local governments, eligible agencies of the Federal government, domestic institutions/organizations, and foreign institutions that offer unusual talent, resources, populations, or environmental conditions that are not readily available in the United States or that augment existing U.S. resources. - Eligible principal investigators include any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH programs. - Investigators may submit more than one application as part of different collaborative groups. There should be no scientific or budgetary overlap.
