- Grant Description
- The purpose of this program is to support the provision of Basic Care Packages (BCP) to HIV-infected persons in Uganda. The BCP that has been developed and standardized by CDC Uganda and the Uganda Ministry of Health is comprised of the following components: supplies of daily cotrimoxazole for prophylaxis, a safe water system with a supply of dilute chlorine solution for prevention of diarrheal diseases, long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets for malaria prevention, condoms and IEC materials on prevention with positives. Implementing organizations or their HIV positive clients can request and receive individual components of this package as desired for specific situations or refills as necessary. Persons infected with HIV, whether or not receiving ARVs, benefit from receiving a quality basic care package. Available field research has documented that key low cost elements of the preventive basic care package improve the quality of life of persons with HIV, prolong survival, and delay the need to initiate ART.
