- Grant Description
- This RFA addresses "Healthy People 2010" priority area(s) of Substance Abuse: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, and Maternal, Infant, and Child Health and is in alignment with NCBDDD performance goal(s) to prevent birth defects and developmental disabilities. For more information, www.healthypeople.gov. and http://intra-apps.cdc.gov/fmo/ Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to a spectrum of adverse consequences for the fetus defined as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) representing the most commonly recognized condition. Children with FAS have facial abnormalities, pronounced neuro-developmental disorders and growth deficits. Prevalence estimates of FAS range from 0.3 to 2 per 1,000 live births. Prevalence estimates of children affected by conditions along the full spectrum (FASD) are as high as 1 in 10. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studies find that approximately 1 in 2 childbearing-aged women report past-month alcohol use, with 1 in 8 reporting binge drinking. Many of these women who are sexually active but not using contraception will become pregnant and are at risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP).
