Research Centers in Trauma, Burn, and Peri-Operative Injury (P50): Purpose. This FOA issued by NIGMS, National Institutes of Health, encourages grant applications from institutions/ organizations for Research Centers in Trauma, Burn, and Peri-operative Injury (RCTBPI) program meant to provide support to 1) Improve understanding at all levels of the biological processes invoked after traumatic or burn injury, or in critically ill patients, including molecular and cellular, physiological, and multilevel integration of homeostatic loss and recovery; 2) Foster translational research, bringing basic scientific observations and principles into the clinical arena and using clinical observations to generate or validate mechanistic hypotheses; and 3) Foster interactions and communications within institutions and throughout the trauma community. RCTBPI applications may include interventional studies if and only if there is connection, harmonization and synergy with the biological and physiological processes under investigation. An application that only proposes an interventional clinical trial would not be appropriate for this funding mechanism. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize P50 Research Center grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
