Research Opportunities in Stuttering (R21): -The NIDCD is encouraging research in stuttering, a communication disorder characterized by dysfluencies in the flow of speech output. The primary objective of this program announcement is to stimulate basic, clinical and translational research in the area of stuttering. The NIDCD sponsored a workshop in March 2005 to summarize the science and identify opportunities for future research. Please see http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/funding/programs/vsl/stutteringwrkshop.asp -This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-06-483, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism. All applicants are advised to communicate with the program staff contacts for information on other funding opportunity announcements. -The total amount to be awarded: Awards issued under this FOA are contingents upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

This announcement applies only to research applications addressing the disorder of communication: stuttering. Basic, clinical and translational research may be submitted.
