Grant Description
-Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to make funding opportunities in the area of energy balance (i.e., the relationship between diet, physical activity, and body composition) known to researchers with expertise and experience in health economics, health services, and econometric modeling (including multi-level analyses) who otherwise might not be aware of the opportunity to apply their disciplines and efforts collectively to this area of research. Obesity has become a major focus of public health efforts at the national, State, and local levels. The major focus of this FOA is to solicit projects that enhance the state-of-the-science on the causes of obesity and to inform Federal decision making on effective public health interventions for reducing the rate of obesity in the United States. This FOA is also intended to promote collaborative activities between researchers trained in economics and researchers specializing in public health, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic diseases so that the desired goals can be more efficiently, quickly, and successfully attained. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-077, that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism.. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
