Restoration of Deir Mar Gorgis: The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad invites eligible organizations to submit proposals for the restoration and conservation of parts of the Monastery of St. George (Deir Mar Gorgis) in northeast Mosul. The Monastery is situated on an ancient archaeological mound near the east bank of the Tigris River. It is associated with a long history of Christian and pre-Christian habitation. Deir Mar Gorgis holds particular religious and cultural significance for the Chaldean Church and other Christian communities. However, ISIS targeted the site in highly publicized acts of iconoclasm, and the monastery suffered significant damage as a result. It is PA Baghdad's intent to award one grant for up to $1,000,000.00 for stabilization and restoration work at the Monastery's two main churches. The project is expected to last 18 months.
