Rock Imagery Documentation and Virtual Tour: Project Description: This project includes baseline documentation of rock art sites at Walnut Canyon National Monument (WACA, The Monument) and the production of a 3D virtual tour for the parkâ¿¿s website. The Monument contains 20 rock imagery (petroglyphs and pictographs) sites associated with the late Archaic (2000 B.C. â¿¿ A.D. 500), northern Sinagua (A.D. 1100â¿¿1250) and Yavapai/Apache (late 1800s â¿¿ mid-twentieth century). This project will complete baseline documentation at five sites. Tasks include archival research and completing scaled mapping, high-resolution digital photography, 3D imaging, and narrative and tabular data. The project also includes production of a virtual tour of Walnut Canyon rock imagery that will be published on the parkâ¿¿s public website. This project will involve students from Northern Arizona University. At least one Anthropology / Archaeology Masters student and up to three undergraduate students will help with pre-field, fieldwork and post-field work tasks. These include archival research, preparing field equipment and learning the operation of technical gear, completing archaeology fieldwork (photography, GPS mapping, scaled drawings, data sheets) and post-field data entry and report writing. All phases of the project provide students with hands-on experience while learning from professional university and federal archaeologists.
