SOFC Sealing Materials and Systems: NOTE - Registration Requirements: As part of the Department?s implementation of e-Government, WE ARE REQUIRING THE SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS THROUGH GRANTS.GOV. There are several one-time actions you must complete in order to submit an application through Grants.gov (e.g., obtain a Dun and Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number, register with the Central Contractor Registration (CCR), register with the credential provider and register with Grants.gov). You must complete all the one-time actions in ?Get Started? at www.Grants.gov prior to submitting your initial application. APPLICANTS, WHO ARE NOT REGISTERED WITH CCR AND GRANTS.GOV, SHOULD ALLOW AT LEAST 14 DAYS TO COMPLETE THESE REQUIREMENTS. It is suggested that the process be started as soon as possible. Area of Interest 15 - SOFC Sealing Materials and Systems Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology has advanced considerably under the Office of Fossil Energy Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) Program. SOFC power generation systems are being developed to operate on syngas derived from coal in FutureGen power plants. Financial assistance applications are sought to research and develop novel glass, glass-ceramic, ceramic-filled glass composite, metal-filled glass composite and/or ceramic-filled metal composite-based seal materials and systems to address planar SOFC sealing needs. Of particular interest are novel seal concepts focusing on seal material composition and structure with an emphasis on attaining long-term durability under typical SOFC operating conditions. Current SECA Program goals require a seal service life of more than 40,000 hours and hundreds of thermal cycles for stationary systems, or at least 5,000 hours and 3,000 thermal cycles for transportation systems. Effective sealing concepts must perform under high temperature, chemically reactive conditions and take into consideration the thermal transient/gradient-induced stresses within the seal, the seal-interconnect interface, the seal-cell interface and the cell itself. Proposed approaches should combine analysis and experimentation to establish theoretical limits, and to evaluate the practical limit of the sealing concept.
