- Eligible Applicants Eligible applicants that can apply for this funding opportunity are listed below: The Special Olympics, Inc is the most appropriate organization and the only national organization capable of implementing and evaluating the health delivery and health promotion activities to successful achieve the objectives of this announcement because the program:  Is designed to help Special Olympics Athletes nationally to improve their health and fitness, leading to enhanced sports experience and improved well-being.  Expanded in 2001 to include training for health care providers to provide serves to this population, training for volunteers, ongoing development of health promotion activities for athletes, national and international games that serve as a model for screening events, and initiatives to increase awareness of the health status and needs of persons with intellectual disability.  Is dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.  Offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports, and as such is the only organization with the national infrastructure and sufficient resources to provide health screenings, education, and promotion on a national and international scale to achieve the objectives of the announcement.  Serves more than 2.25 million persons with intellectual disabilities in more than 200 Programs in more than 160 countries.  Possesses a national and international network of trained health care providers, programs and resources to achieve the health care delivery and health promotion objectives of this announcement;  Is capable of conducting national sports and health events and training to reach the ID population and has the infrastructure to conduct these types of national health screenings for the ID population.

- The purpose of the program is to provide funding to conduct national activities to improve the health of Special Olympics (SO) athletes so that they can perform better and more safely in sports and in life and to support national intellectual disability (ID) health delivery and health promotion training for health professionals and others that provide care for the ID population, implement and promote national ID health service delivery, and implement national health screening and physical examinations for people intellectual disability at Special Olympics events.
