Stabilization of Humanities Collections: Grants for Stabilizing Humanities Collections help museums, libraries, archives, and historical organizations preserve their humanities collections through support for improved housing and storage, environmental conditions, security, lighting, and fire protection. Eligible activities include: the purchase of storage furniture and the rehousing of humanities collections and materials that directly document the collections, such as field notes, site maps, or catalog records; the improvement of environmental conditions under which collections are stored or exhibited (which may encompass the installation of climate control systems); and the installation of security, lighting, and fire detection and suppression systems. As part of a stabilization project, support may also be requested to update location and condition information in the institution's database and for photodocumentation of collections. Renovation costs associated with rehousing projects and the installation of climate control, security, lighting, and fire protection systems may also be supported. When renovation activities place collections at risk, support may be requested for their relocation and temporary storage. Stabilization grants cannot support new construction; therefore, the costs of installing climate control, security, lighting, and fire protection systems in a building under construction are not eligible. Applicants may, however, request funds to purchase storage furniture and rehouse collections that will be moved into a new building. Stabilization projects should be based on the findings and recommendations of appropriate professionals, such as conservators, architects, engineers, or other specialists who have been engaged to work with the institution's staff.
