- Grant Description
- Twenty-three States and the District of Columbia have adopted renewable portfolio standards (RPS), which establish a minimum quantity or percentage of electricity supply that utilities and other retailers must provide from eligible renewable energy sources. Renewable energy certificates or credits (RECs) are often used and traded to verify compliance with RPS policies. One REC typically represents a record of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generation. RECs are also used to meet customer demand for voluntary green power purchases. The objective of this Area of Interest is to build upon and expand existing trading blocks and encourage the development of robust markets for voluntary REC trading, as well as to examine the interaction of white tags and renewable attributes through supporting analysis, creation of supporting infrastructure, and through establishment of functioning trading systems. Projects in this Area will support efforts which increase the liquidity and scope of REC trading by extending and expanding voluntary, interstate trading of RECs in addition to gaining a better understanding of how white tags can be integrated into trading instruments and certificates.
