Steps to a HealthierUS: National Organization Partnerships: In June 2002, the President of the United States launched his HealthierUS initiative, which highlights the influence that healthy lifestyles and behaviors have in achieving and maintaining good health for persons of all ages. In response, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services created the ?Steps to a HealthierUS Initiative.? The centerpiece of the Steps Initiative is a five-year cooperative agreement which funds communities to improve the lives of Americans through innovative and effective community-based health promotion and chronic disease prevention and control programs. The purpose of this new announcement (CDC PA04134) is to fund one or more national organizations to develop and implement strategies for effective collaborative action, program development and policy education to supplement the Steps Initiative. The national organizations will assist the funded Steps Communities in support of their efforts in living longer, better, and healthier lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, obesity, and asthma, and addressing three related risk factors- physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use. The application deadline is June 8, 2004, and the estimated funding date is September 1, 2004.
