Stress Management Interventions to Reduce Risk of Coronary Artery Disease (R01): Purpose. The purpose of this program announcement is to encourage applications that evaluate the efficacy of stress management interventions on intermediate outcomes purported to be in the biological or behavioral mechanistic pathway through which mental stress (MS) is thought to influence major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with confirmed coronary artery disease (CAD). These include subclinical measures of atherosclerosis, measures of cardiac or endothelial function, or measures such as cardiovascular reactivity or neurohumoral response to a provocative mental stress test. The ultimate goal is to determine whether stress management interventions can slow progression of CAD or reduce MACE and, if so, to translate effective stress management interventions to clinical practice.
