Studies of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) of Human Microbiome Research (R01): Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for studies that address the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of human microbiome research: the study and application of the metagenomic analysis of the human microbiota. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total funds available for these awards are approximately $1 million total costs per year for three years. Approximately 4 awards are anticipated. The expected amount of each award is $150,000 to $250,000 (direct costs). An applicant may request a project period of up to 3 years and a budget for direct costs up to $250,000 per year. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Eligible Institutions/Organizations.
