- Grant Description
- -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the NIA and NICHD is intended to stimulate research on the concept of juvenile protective factorsnamely that certain factors that are active during one or most post-natal maturational stages exert protective effects that inhibit the onset or progression of specific adverse aging changes. The diminution or disappearance of such protective factors in early life, after a given maturational stage could contribute to the onset of age-related declines in a variety of functions and increases in risk factors for age-related outcomes. Examples of possible juvenile protective factors include specific stem or progenitor cell populations, growth factors, regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation, and other factors contributing to tissue maintenance, resistance to stressors, and injury recovery. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. $2.2 million in total costs (direct plus indirect) have been set aside to fund this initiative in FY2008. It is anticipated that 5-6 awards will be made. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
