- NOTE: Please read the Master Funding OpportunityAnnouncement (attached below)for complete details on evaluation criteria and application preparationinstructions.SUB-AREA OF INTEREST 1B: Seals - Innovative Sealing ConceptsApplications are sought for novel seal materials and/or design concepts toaddress solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) sealing needs. Proposed approachesshouldcombine analysis and experimentation to establish and evaluate thepracticalperformance limits of the sealing concept.Desired characteristics of the seal material(s)/seal system:?Aggregate manufactured cost for a 5kW SECA stack on the order of $50 orless.?Accommodate as-fabricated cell and interconnect dimensional variations.?Service life of more than 40,000 hours and hundreds of thermal cycles forstationary systems.?Electrically insulating.?Chemically and physically stable in a high-temperature reactive SOFCenvironment.?Chemically and mechanically compatible with the materials (e.g., Ni/YSZcermetanode and ferritic stainless steel interconnect) of the particular SOFCsystemdesign.?Fuel leakage should not exceed 1% of the fuel flowrate(uniformlydistributed,0.7 kPa differential pressure across the seal) for a cell with nominaldimensions of 15cm x 15cm after exposing the SOFC stack to ten or morethermalcycles.Cost, manufacturability and reliability are critical factors in meetingSECAProgram goals.
