Supporting the implementation and capacity building of HIV/AIDS prevention interventions for youth using evidence- based approaches in South Africa under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR): In South Africa HIV is a generalized epidemic; however incidence among youth (age 15 - 24 years) continues to remain high. Many young people are growing up in poverty stricken circumstances and are not able to 'see' a positive future for themselves, reduce sexual risk behavior and make safer choices. In view of the aforementioned, there is a need to - - Reduce sexual risk behavior among adolescent girls and boys by giving parents/guardians tools to facilitate and promote primary HIV prevention to their pre-adolescent children including utilizing preventative services and products such as voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), HIV testing and counselling (HTC), and condoms; - Enhance the knowledge and skills of parents/guardians to promote positive social norms that enhance HIV prevention and nurture positive gender relations; - Provide parents/guardians with necessary knowledge and skills to identify signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse and gender-based violence; and exercise means to address it; - Support parents/guardians in creating a supportive environment that increases adolescents' self-efficacy to delay sexual debut, prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies; - Capacitate young people to meet their developmental tasks namely becoming more individual, establishing identity and self-acceptance, exploring their adult identity, and determining their peer affiliation; and - Capacitate youth to imagine a positive future and enable them to identify and discuss how current risk behaviors can be a barrier to successful adulthood are how to reduce sexual risk behaviors and make safer choices.
