The specific interest is to quantitatively define the bitumen resource within specific U.S. oil sands deposits of the applicants choice to perform quantitative geological studies to define the resource (from well logs, maps, core analysis etc.), grade and location of the bitumen ore, depositional environment, overburden, resource and surface ownership, and other factors (including absence of data) that would be required for either surface extraction and/or in situ extraction of bitumen from the deposit. These studies can be in combination with state agencies and or private institutions that could help fund and or supply data in defining the resource. Of importance is the training of students in researching previous geologic studies and applying geological evaluation techniques that they have learned from course work to evaluate a prospect or site by development of a complete quantitative electronic data package that could be used for future economic study.
