Targeting Diseases Caused by Protein Misfolding or Misprocessing: - The purpose of this PAR is to invite qualified scientific investigators to submit applications designed to identify small molecule reagents that specifically prevent or ameliorate a protein folding or processing defect in simple and complex genetic diseases that are of interest to the participating institutes. - This funding opportunity will use the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) and Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) award mechanisms. The total project period for an application in response to this PAR may not exceed the following durations: 2 years for the R21, and 5 years for the R01. Exploratory/developmental grant applications are highly encouraged. - Organizations that have any of the following characteristics may submit applications: For profit or non-profit, public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories, units of State and local governments, and domestic or foreign institutions/organizations. - Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research is invited to work with his/her institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH programs. - Applicants may submit more than one application, providing there is no scientific or budgetary overlap.
