Novel Sensing Techniques For Rapid Detection of Coal Derived Synthesis Gas (DE-PS26-06NT42751-1B) Emerging high efficiency turbine and fuel cell power systems rely on and react to changing gas constituents in the fuel. Managing the impact of fuel variability on the high performance power systems is important and requires that the fuel be monitored continuously. As the utilization of coal derived synthesis gas is expanded, understanding and controlling fuel variability will be an important factor for high performance power systems. Traditional measurement techniques, used to examine natural gas quality, can provide an accurate analysis of coal derived synthesis gas characteristics and total BTU value of the gas mixture. However, the response time in combination with accurate quantification of individual gas constituents are insufficient for use as a real time diagnostic sensor for emerging power systems. New approaches to detect and quantify individual gas constituents found in synthesis gas are requested. Proposed techniques should target response times of approximately 1 second for the quantification of the gas composition.
