The Obese and Diabetic Intrauterine Environment: Long-term Metabolic or Cardiovascular Consequences in the Offspring: - The incidence of obesity in the general population has increased to epidemic proportions over the last 25 years. Of particular concern is emerging evidence indicating that maternal obesity and gestational diabetes may lead to an increase in neonatal weight and body adiposity. As infant and childhood obesity are predictive of adult obesity, maternal overnutrition could potentially exacerbate the already alarming incidence of obesity and metabolic disease in the general population. - The purpose of this RFA is to solicit applications investigating the effect of maternal obesity and diabetes on mechanisms that could potentially contribute to obesity, cancer, cardiovascular or metabolic disease in the offspring. The objectives are: 1) to elucidate, if and how, maternal overnutrition can elicit permanent metabolic or cardiovascular disease in the fetus and 2) to provide the scientific basis whereby future prevention and intervention studies in humans can be developed. - The participating institutes plan on contributing $3.75 million in FY2006 to fund 12-14 awards with project periods of 2-4 years. - RO1 and R21 applications from principal investigators are invited for basic and clinical studies. - Non-profit or for-profit organizations are eligible, including public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals and laboratories, units of State Government, units of Local Government, eligible agencies of the Federal Government, domestic and foreign institutions. - Eligible principal investigators include those with the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. - Applicants may submit more than one application, provided they are scientifically distinct. - See Section IV.1 for application materials. - Telecommunications for the hearing impaired is available at: TTY 301-451-0088
