Trails Repair and Maintenance at Pictured Rocks NLS (YPP): The principal purpose of the project is to support the Government's objective to provide opportunities for youth to learn about the environment by spending time working on projects in national parks. The NPS receives the indirect benefit of completing conservation projects. Throughout the program, youth workers will have the opportunity to visit and learn about the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (PIRO) where they may be working with other youth on service learning projects in a team-based training program. The youth workers will be encouraged to provide presentations to their peers and communities about their experience and in doing so will be delivering a message of environmental stewardship. The Child and Family Services Northwestern Michigan (Recipient) will recruit one (1) crew leader and four (4) crewmemebers to work on the Chapel Area to Beaver Creek Trail at PIRO. In 2018 this project will cover replacement, repair, and addition of assets along three sections of trail from the Chapel Area to Beaver Creek. The work will consist of removal, repairing, replacement, or addition of trail structures such as stairs, boardwalks, bridges and turnpike. The work will consist of manual labor to haul the materials and tools needed to and from the site. Work will take approximately four (4) weeks to complete and will require oversight from a crew leader and park personal. The Recipient director has unique qualifications due to the skills and experience with trail work; his expertise with previous trail work at PIRO will assist with the continuity of the current requested trail work requested.
