Grant Description
The Klamath Basin Area Office, Klamath Falls, Oregon, is implementing a program to screen private diversions on Upper Klamath Lake (UKL) to meets its Endangered Species Act entrainment reduction responsibilities. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has been working in the Upper Klamath Basin to screen diversions and has completed one screen on UKL, and has generated preliminary concept plans for another UKL diversion site. Reclamation must assure that any new screens ultimately designed and constructed through this program satisfies "Recommended Interim Fish Screen Criteria for the Upper Klamath Basin," adopted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the ODFW, and the California Department of Fish and Game in July 2005. The objective of the UKL Fish Screen Program is to: 1) help eliminate one of the anthropogenic factors limiting the recovery of endangered shortnose and Lost River suckers; and 2) demonstrate that expenditures of public monies for screening are invested where the biological value is greatest for the fish species at risk.
