Water Security Initiative Contamination Warning System Demonstration Pilots: EPA is soliciting applications to assist community water systems with demonstrating and evaluating contamination warning system pilots. These pilots will be part of the Agencys Water Security (WS) initiative, formerly known as WaterSentinel. The goal for these contamination warning systems is to achieve timely detection of and appropriate response to possible contamination events in drinking water distribution systems. Under this program, contamination warning system demonstration pilots must include five monitoring and surveillance components, (1) online water quality monitoring, (2) sampling and analysis, (3) enhanced security monitoring, (4) consumer complaint surveillance, and (5) public health surveillance, and a consequence management plan. Further, the pilots must include a review and evaluation plan to assess the operation, performance, and sustainability of the contamination warning system. The total project period will be three years. Community water systems that implement contamination warning system pilots will enhance their ability to detect and respond to potential contamination events and will experience "dual-use" benefits such as improved water quality management. In addition, through information generated by these projects, community water systems nationally will be better able to make decisions regarding approaches for implementing contamination warning systems.
