Youth in Action (Jovenes en Accion JA), Culture of Lawfulness: Jovenes en Accion (JA) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City (Embassy), the Mexican Secretariat for Public Education (SEP), and the private sector. Now entering its third year, the program offers Mexican high school students the opportunity to develop leadership and civic engagement skills through intensive workshops in the United States. Applicants form teams of four to five members and propose their own community service projects to 1) tackle issues related to violence and substance abuse prevention among at-risk youth in their schools and hometowns; and 2) promote a culture of lawfulness. Accepted participants develop their skills and projects through a five-week summer program in the United States. Each group has at least two mentors: a professor from the group's school (that they select) and a volunteer from the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate. Upon return to Mexico, the groups have an academic year to implement their service projects.
