Advanced Concepts for High Temperature Tribology: This solicitation requests innovative concepts for lubrication at temperatures well beyond the current state-of-the-art. Ideas will be considered in the areas of liquid lubrication, solid lubrication and advanced tribological mechanisms for high temperature operation. The outlook for application is far term (15 to 20 years). Both building block approaches with an incremental temperature range increase and revolutionary break-through concepts are welcomed. It is desirable to maintain a low temperature capability while pushing the upper limit of the operating temperatures. We anticipate 4 or 5 awards focused on establishing the scientific foundation and feasibility of revolutionary materials and/or systems for reliable operation during multiple launch and return missions.
