AmeriCorps National FY 2005 Planning Grant: The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three main programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Working with national and community nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies, the Corporation engages Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas. Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility in America. For more information, visit www.nationalservice.org AMERICORPS AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. AmeriCorps*National awards grants to organizations proposing multi-state AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps*National Planning Grants are to assist faith- or small community-based organizations in their development of a stong AmeriCorps program design. AmeriCorps programs are designed by the applicant organization to address community needs through the assistance of individuals who commit to a term of service of 300 to 1700 hours per year. These individuals are called AmeriCorps Members and after successful completion of a term of service, they earn an education award that can be used to pay for college or graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Full-time AmeriCorps members also receive a living allowance and health benefits. Organizations that are awarded AmeriCorps grants are responsible for recruiting the AmeriCorps members to serve in their program. AmeriCorps grants partially cover the expenses of operating an AmeriCorps program and do not cover general organizational expenses. A cash and in-kind match is required.
