Animal Models of Endophenotypes and Intermediate Phenotypes for Alcohol Related Behaviors (RO1): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Project Grants (R01s) that propose to characterize existing animal models that can represent human endophenotypes and intermediate phenotypes for alcohol dependence and related behaviors. Animal models that reflect relevant human endophenotypic behavioral traits such as novelty seeking, impulsivity, anxiety and depression and that are associated with increased risk for alcohol dependence are sought. Studies that relate endophenotypes to alcohol responses such as sensitivity, tolerance and withdrawal severity will facilitate the determination of the genetic influences on the vulnerability to alcohol dependence and the gene and environment interactions contributing to the progression to compulsive alcohol consumption. Multidisciplinary collaborations using state-of-the-art technologies are encouraged. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-AA-07-014, that solicits applications under the Research Project (R21) mechanism. Applications submitted in response to this FOA will be capped at $250,000 in direct costs and use the modular budget format. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. A total of $1.5M is to be awarded and 3-4 awards are anticipated.
