Area of Interest 2: Tight Gas Completion and StimulationTechnologies: NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview ofthis Funding Opportunity.YOU MUST READ THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY MASTER ANNOUNCEMENT FOR DETAILS ONADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE ANAPPLICATIONUNDER A SPECIFIC AREA OF INTEREST. Please scroll to the bottom of thispageunder the heading Full Announcement and Other Files and click on the linktoaccess the Master Announcement.Applicants are strongly cautioned to begin transmission of an applicationatleast 24 hours in advance to allow for sufficient time for uploading filesandto ensure adequate time to address problems or concerns with transmissionof anapplication, if any.Questions regarding how to submit an application through IIPS can bee-mailedto the IIPS HELP Desk at [email protected] or by calling 1-800-683-0751.The general objective of this Announcement is to develop new drilling, completion, and stimulation technologies that will aid the United States inmeeting the increasing natural gas demands of the future. As most of theconventional reservoirs have already been discovered, it will be necessarytodrill into unconventional, more complex, deeper, harsher, and lower-qualityreservoirs to search for tomorrow?s gas supply. These unconventionalsourcesare known to contain vast quantities of gas across large areas andthroughoutthick columns of strata in many of the nation?s basins, however;approximatelyless than 1% of this gas can be produced economically. Therefore, newtechnologies are needed to make these resources economic and help thenationmeet its energy needs. Additionally technologies to economically access andproduce from the deep (>20,000 feet) and/or high temperature(>250/degrees/C) highpressures (>20,000 psi) caustic gas resources are also included in thisAnnouncement. The technologies and needs to drill and produce the deephorizonshave been identified in the Deep Trek R D Planning Workshop held March20-21,2001 and by industry forums such as The Gulf of Mexico Shallow Water DeepGasworkshops. To achieve the objectives, the DOE/NETL, through the Office of Natural Gas,isrequesting applications under three (3) Areas of Interest. This cover pagecontains information and allows for submission of an application for AreaofInterest 2: Tight Gas Completion and Stimulation Technologies ONLY.Technological advances will need to be made in order to produce the vastresources in the tight formations of the United States. These may and maynotbe applicable in deep HTHP harsh environments; but, must be step changes tocurrent technologies used or known to exist. This section would includeresearch to advance the status of today?s technologies in the completionandstimulation area in tight gas formations. Possible areas include, but arenotlimited to:1. New completion and stimulation procedures for tight formationsa. New completion procedures to significantly reduce stimulation time ofmultiple zonesb. Low cost proppants with improved strength and conductivity propertiesc. Non-damaging stimulation fluids2. Drilling Fluids and Completion fluidsa. Advanced technologies of well control, hole stability with little or nodamage to target formation or pass through formationsb. New concept changing non-damaging drilling and completion fluids(non-damaging non-infiltrating) smart fluid
