BLM CA Desert Lizards in Panoche Region: This project seeks to understand the genetic diversity, structure, connectivity, and stability of the populations of Xantusia vigilis (Desert Night Lizard) in the Panoche Hills, California. This information is essential for informing how historical processes helped shape reptile diversity in central California arid zones, for understanding the evolutionary history of the genus Xantusia in North America, and for augmenting management strategies for use by the Bureau of Land Management in the Panoche Hills. The results are expected to have immediate application in allowing us to assess the significance of observed population subdivision among subpopulations of the endangered blunt-nosed leopard lizard, Gambelia sila, in the Panoche region.
