COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE PAN AMERICAN HEALTH ORGANIZATION (PAHO): Protecting the Advances in Polio, Rubella and Measles Elimination: Strengthening Immunization Programs in the Americas: The cooperative agreement will support the US Government endorsed Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Global Measles Initiative, and the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy, 2006-2015. In particular this agreement will support polio, measles, rubella and other VPD surveillance, global laboratory networks for polio, measles, rubella and other diseases prevented by new vaccines, planning and implementation of supplemental immunization campaigns, strengthening of routine immunization delivery systems, introduction of new vaccines and capacities in developing countries. All are critical to achieving globally agreed goals for disease eradication, elimination and reduction. Additionally this agreement may be used to support activities to address other global health priorities. This program addresses the Healthy People 2020 focus area(s) of Immunization and Infectious Diseases. Measurable outcomes of the program will be in alignment with the following performance goals for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Global Health (CGH) and the Coordinating Office of Global Health (COGH): Global Health Goal 4: Help domestic and international partners achieve World Health Organizations goal of global polio eradication Global Health Goal 5: Work with global partners to reduce the cumulative global measles-related mortality by 95% compared with 2000 estimates (baseline 777,000 deaths) and to maintain elimination of endemic measles transmission in all 47 countries of the Americas.

- The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is an international public health agency with more than 100 years of experience in working to improve health and living standards of the countries of the Americas. It serves as the specialized organization for health of the Inter-American System. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization and enjoys international recognition as part of the United Nations system. The Pan American Health Organization is the only trans-national health organization in the hemisphere with a presence in each of the member countries. This and its long history of setting the standard for public health and immunizations globally makes PAHO uniquely qualified to implement the regional immunization vision and strategy.
