Characterization of Mycobacterial Induced Immunity in HIV-infected and Uninfected Individuals (R21): The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support hypothesis-generating research on innate and adaptive immune responses induced by mycobacterial infection, Bacillus Calmette-Gurin vaccine (BCG), or other Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) vaccinations.Studies that include evaluation of immune responses by anatomical location in HIV-infected or uninfected individuals are of particular interest.A secondary objective of this FOA is development of new assays and technologies enabling comparison of mycobacterial-specific mucosal and systemic immunological pathways in HIV-infected or uninfected individuals that can be used to monitor immune responses in preclinical studies and vaccine trials to advance Mtb vaccine development.
