Chronic Kidney Disease Biomarker Discovery and Validation Consortium (U01): Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to discover or validate biomarkers for well-defined human chronic kidney diseases (CKD). The purpose of this initiative is to establish a multi-center consortium to discover new and/or validate already identified biomarkers for CKD. CKD is a major public health problem in the United States and in many other industrialized countries. The prevalence of Stage 1-4 CKD in the U.S. increased from 10.0% in 1988-1994 to 13.1% in 1999-2004. The burden of kidney failure, Stage 5 CKD, in the U.S. is also substantial and costly. Prevention, management, and regression of CKD are major goals of the NIDDK.
