Collaborative R01s for Clinical and Services Studies of Mental Disorders, AIDS and Alcohol Use Disorders (R01): Purpose. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) seek to support collaborative intervention trials in the treatment, prevention or rehabilitation of those with mental disorders and alcohol use disorders and comorbid mental disorders. Support is also provided for other collaborative clinical studies, including but not limited to mental health services research, AIDS, genetics, psychopathology, stigma, and cultural and social processes. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) should be used when two or more sites are needed to complete the study. Accordingly, the collaborating studies share a specific protocol across the sites and are organized as such in order to increase sample size, accelerate recruitment, or increase sample diversity and representation. In studies with a large number of sites, it is expected that one site will be submitted as a coordinating site for data management and/or other centralized administration. For a linked set of collaborative R01s, each site has its own Project Director/Principal Investigator and the program provides a mechanism for cross-site coordination, quality control, database management, statistical analysis, and reporting. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Collaborative Research Project Grant (Collaborative R01) award mechanism. For each set of linked collaborative R01 applications, it is expected that each application will be coordinated and interlocked with the others as each application will contribute an essential component to the overall study. In the case of multi-site clinical trials, it is anticipated that the same protocol will be submitted by each site. However, there are likely to be elements unique to some sites (e.g., data coordination, fidelity assessment, statistical analyses).
