Commercial Truck Driver Health and Safety- Preventing Injury and Illness: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites applications to conduct research projects that address specified work-related safety and health issues affecting large truck operators (gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 lb) safety and health. The intent of this RFA is to stimulate and fund research that will address work-related health issues associated with commercial truck driving. The desired outcomes are to characterize health risks, and ultimately to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions to reduce specific work-related health risks and thus enhance driver health. -Competitive projects may lead to characterization and prevention of non-fatal injuries (including slips, trips and falls, and musculoskeletal disorders or MSD, and serious or chronic illnesses (such as hypertension) potentially associated with the operation of large commercial trucks. -Projects that implement and evaluate interventions to reduce the risk or consequences of non-fatal injuries, musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD), or serious chronic illnesses are particularly encouraged and such projects should include a well described evaluation plan. -NIOSH intends to commit approximately one million dollars per year for this program. -The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA) is planning to support funding for this program. The FMCSA has indicated that an evaluation of the Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations will be conducted separately, and also, related studies of the impact of fatigue are expected. Hence, the effects of HOS and fatigue on driver health will not be given priority under this RFA. -NIOSH intends to fund three to four new grants in response to this RFA. The maximum direct cost that may be requested is $200,000 per year for three years. -This funding opportunity will use the investigator initiated research R01 mechanism. -Eligible organizations include domestic institutions that are: for profit or non-profit organizations; public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of State and local government, federally recognized Indian tribal governments, Indian tribes, Indian tribal organizations, and faith-based and community-based organizations. Foreign institutions are not eligible. -Title 2 of the United States Code section 1611 states that an organization described in section 501 (c) (4) of the Internal Revenue Code that engages in lobbying activities is not eligible to receive Federal funds constituting an award, grant, or loan. -Eligible principal investigators include any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research and to work with their institutions to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIOSH programs. -Applicants may submit more than one application, provided they are scientifically distinct. All proposals must include adequately described evaluation criteria. -See Section IV.1 for application materials. -Telecommunications for the hearing impaired is available at: TTY 301-451-0088
