Consequences of Drug Abuse and Alcohol Exposure on Brain and Behavioral Development: This RFA requests research on the consequences of drug and alcohol use, abuse, and addiction on human brain and behavioral development. Considerable research has demonstrated that drugs of abuse affect many brain areas and many behavioral domains. However, relatively little is known about drug effects on brain and behavioral development per se. Research proposed in response to this RFA directed toward NIDA's mission may propose investigations of the behavioral or neurobiological effects of abused drugs at any time during development. NIAAA seeks research specifically on the consequences of adolescent alcohol abuse and dependence. This RFA will use the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) and Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) award mechanisms. Since one of the goals of this RFA is to encourage new collaborations among investigators from different fields, the R21 mechanism may be particularly appropriate for some applicants. Eligible organizations includ! e for-profit or non-profit organizations, public or private institutions (e.g., universities, colleges, hospitals), units of state and local governments, eligible agencies of the Federal government, domestic or foreign institutions, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Eligible principal investigators include any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply for NIH programs. Applications must be prepared using the PHS 398 research grant application instructions and forms. The PHS 398 document is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html in an interactive format. There is no limit to the number of different applications an applicant may submit under this announcement.
