Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), North Atlantic Coast CESU: The focus of this project is to identify and describe the scientific basis for ecological thresholds, "limits of acceptable variation", and/or "management trigger points" for vital signs being used by parks to monitor the condition of salt marsh vegetation and nekton communities. The terms "ecological threshold", "limits of acceptable variation", "management trigger point", and "regulatory standard" may represent the same thing or be different, depending on the vital sign and specific measures being monitored. Using a combination of literature reviews, existing datasets, analytical methods, and modeling, the intent of the research is to identify, develop and describe methods for scientifically determining defensible upper and/or lower limits, or in some cases a range of values that serve as "ecological tipping points" or values that would trigger some management action if exceeded. Examples of potential management actions range from "pay more attention", "increase sampling effort" or "initiate a detailed study", to active restoration or habitat manipulation activities.
