Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), Piedmont CESU: The purpose of the U.S. Geological Surveys Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) funding opportunity is to conduct research on formal and informal trail impact monitoring within the Potomac Gorge. Research objectives are to experimentally apply and evaluate selected educational and site management actions to reduce off-trail traffic and trampling damage. Resource degradation along trails is an inevitable consequence of visitor use. Even low levels of trampling disturbance reduce ground vegetation height, cover, and biomass, and may alter species composition by eliminating fragile species. Higher levels of trampling cause more complete ground vegetation loss and compositional change. Concentrated traffic also pulverizes organic leaf litter and underlying soils, which then become vulnerable to erosion and compaction. USGS funding for this project was provided under the Natural Resources Preservation Program, which supports research on topics of high priority to the National Park Service. The primary objective of this project is to provide information products that will focus and improve the effectiveness of management programs for sustaining visitor use while minimizing associated impacts to park natural resources and processes.
